"This book is something interesting. I loved it: loved Adamsberg and his unorthodoxy, loved the story that moved in (chalk?) circles until it resolved. I’ll definitely be reading more Vargas in the future, and I recommend you do the same." - Jenny from Shelf Love

Letter from Paris: Life Lessons in Père Lachaise Cemetery

On December 22, 2011, I attended my first funeral held at Père Lachaise. George Whitman, the legendary owner of beloved bookstore Shakespeare and Company was laid to rest with a moving tribute befitting his spirit. The man who walked on foot through Central America, read a book every night, and welcomed literally thousands of writers to sleep, work, and create in his bookshop, embodied an unwavering generosity and trust of humanity almost startling in an increasingly divided world. “Be not inhospitable to strangers/Lest they be angels in disguise” – these Yeats lines were written on the bookstore’s walls and manifested by Whitman’s actions over his 98 years.

A wonderful account of Paris's famous Père Lachaise cemetery and the funeral of Shakespeare and Co's George Whitman from Paris-based writer Sion Dayson.

"He was perhaps Cuba's most famous American resident and the preservation of Ernest Hemingway's home lead to a rare collaboration between the U.S. and its communist neighbour. " - Louise Boyle at Mail Online

Hemingway's rundown Cuban house about 15 miles from Havana has now been fully restored. But while you are welcome to make a visit - you can only see it from the outside. Take a look inside with this article. The house contains thousands of Hemingway's documents, books and other items he treasured.
